The ruins of Herculaneum are a site not to be missed. It is still under excavation, and some of the ancient city will likely remain buried since the modern city of Ercolano has been built on top of the ruins. The same eruption that buried Pompeii in ash, buried Herculaneum in mud. The mud was so deep, it extended the shoreline 400 meters farther out into the sea.
